A minimal bone resection (approximately 10 millimeters) is done.  The talus will be slightly sculptured during the surgical procedure.  This minimal bone resection allows revision in the future, if necessary.  The procedure retains more of the talus, which is the crucial bone in the event that fusion is ever necessary.  The risk of failure is significantly less with the Buechel-Pappas device.  Major concern with revision surgery is due to the amount of bone that remains.  The surgical techniques for implanting the Buechel-Pappas total ankle requires minimal bone resection for the insertion of the implant compared to other devices on the market.
