In many instances, the range-of-motion that the patient has before the surgery determines the mobility after the procedure.  If there is significant stiffness present per-operatively, then less motion can be expected after surgery.  Thus, it is recommended that the patient have their ankle evaluated for ankle-replacement surgery before the ankle becomes too stiff.
